Green for fan, etc.īut if the C neutral is present, it will use the current to power itself. All the thermostat does is loop that current to the white wire to call for heat, or the yellow to call for A/C. The red wire is the one supplying a constant 24 VAC. It allows thermostats to be powered by the 24 VAC transformer in the furnace. The "C" stands for common, and it's actually an electrical neutral. I tried to connect to the C on the transformer (where the white is connected) but getting the same issues as youĭo you have a smart thermostat? Those are the ones that use a "C" wire. (unless you're referring to a different transformer)Īnd i have the extra blue wire that i can use as the C from my thermostat to connect to somewhere. So i have a transformer that only has a the red and white wires attached to it. Here is a photo of the transformer wires in a very nice and clear spaghetti pattern. Thanks a lot! I tapped the yellow as you suggested and works like a it is a boiler and it has no control board (and I really wish it came with it). Put back the Red and White wires as they were, and just tap the Yellow from the transformer to any spare wire (blue is fine) and connect that to the common on the nest. if so, that is wrong.īlack and White - That is the 120V into the transformer It sounds like you are tapping into the white. The White and Red wires from the Tstat to your boiler should not be changed at all ! It only has Red and White wires, but the cable has other wires (Blue, green, yello) that are not used and they are not connected either at the furnace transformer There is no label that says "C" or anything like that.įurnace_wiring_diagram.png (250.31 KiB) Viewed 9307 times ![]() However, it is a huge spaghetti mess but it has labels for the thermostats connections and for the power coming from my circuit breaker. I have photos of the wires of the transformers and furnace if you'd like to see. ![]() Or can I even do this? Does this transformer have enough power? I saw that there is a product like Fast-Stat or even a plug in transformer, but I'd really like to have a clean install/look by reusing that blue wire that is already in the thermostat cable. I think that I am tapping the C-wire wrongly. Typically, the vent damper valve opens and then gas burner starts to start boiling the water to send the steam to the radiators. So the gas burner does not even start burning (I can hear it if so). I can hear that the vent damper valve was trying to open and it was doing so very slowly as if there is not enough power, and I don't think it was able to open. When I went down to my furnace (in the basement), it was also not behaving normally. It seems like it is not getting enough power from the blue (c-wire) wire. It does not complain that it needs the C-wire anymore, So I was happy.īut when I tried to change the temperature on the thermostats, it suddenly shows an error saying "Power lost" or "wifi disconnected". I was able to add the thermostats to my google home using the app. I connected the white wire to W, red to R, and blue to C on my thermostat connection plate. So at least the blue wire can carry electricity. I get the following readings when I touched the black and red probe alternatively to white, red, and blue wires: I went back to my thermostat and tested with my multimeter. So I used a wago nut to put all three wires together. I connected the blue wire to where the white wire of the thermostat. The thermostat red wire is connected to the blue (BL) wire from transformer, and white wire is connected to the brown (BR) wire.Ĭan someone tell me where I can tap the c-wire for this system? ![]() I have labelled where the red and white wires from the thermostats are connected at the furnace transformer in the wiring diagram. I've attached the wiring diagram of the furnace. The transformer has 4 (White, Black, Blue and Yellow) wires coming out of it and connected to the rest of the furnace wires. What I am trying to do is to use one of those unused wires (the blue one) as a C-wire by tapping into the furnace transformer. It only has Red and White wires, but the cable has other wires (Blue, green, yello) that are not used and they are not connected either at the furnace transformer (I was able to trace it back and confirmed that only red and white wires are connected at the transformer). However, it needs a C-wire and my current honeywell thermostats does not have one. I am trying to install the google nest thermostat.
